    Description

A pair of original shoulder straps for a Civil War artillery major. The oak leaf devices are in gold wire (as opposed to the silver wire of a lieutenant colonel), and are on a red velvet field, indicating the artillery branch of service. The 1/4” wide embroidered border features both bright and dead bullion and is edged by an inner and outer jaceron border. The underlay material is black, which is folded and sewn under the edges. The overall length of each strap is about 4” long by just under 1 1/2” wide. They are about 1/4" thick. Excellent condition on this pair, with the embroidery intact and secure. There is some light wear to the red velvet field and the bottom of the underlay. An ultraviolet light was used to look for the presence of modern threads, but none were found.
