The Convent of São Bento de Avis was male and belonged to the Military Order of Avis.
The kingdom of Portugal, founded in the first half of the 12th century, was contemporary with the Crusades of the East, was born and consolidated in the context of the crusade against the Moors, or Christian Reconquest, in which religious orders whose function was to expel Muslims from the Peninsula participated Iberian.
In 1158, the Order of Calatrava was founded with the help of King Sancho III of Castile, adopting the Rule of Saint Benedict and the Constitution of the Order of Cister. From that, the Order of São Bento de Avis was born, as an autonomous arm in the kingdom of Portugal.
In 1564, briefly from Pope Pius IV, obtained by the Table of Conscience and Orders, the reform of the statutes of the Orders of São Tiago and São Bento de Avis was initiated. In 1572, on the 6th of February, when King Sebastião reigned, new statutes and regiments were given to the three military orders.
The foundation of a convent for the commanders of the Military Order of Avis is due to the will of Infanta D. Maria, daughter of D. Manuel I, who died in 1577. Several vicissitudes, related to the historical context of the following decades, led to that the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação was only founded in 1614, under the aegis of Filipe III.
The women commanders set up provisionally at the Palácio dos Condes de Caria, at Poço do Borratém, since the construction of the current complex only began in 1625. At this time, the works were conducted by Baltazar Álvares and, shortly after, by Mateus do Couto, uncle. A large fire occurred in 1734, and the damage caused by the earthquake of 1 November 1755 required major interventions in the convent building.
